PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The University of the Southwest men's basketball team came up short in a fast-paced contest Friday night, dropping an 89-93 decision to Nelson University Arizona at the Warriors' home court.

Southwest traded blows with the Warriors throughout the first half, trailing by just two points at the break (49–47). Despite outscoring Nelson in the paint (48–38) and winning the second-chance battle (10–8), the Mustangs couldn't overcome a late surge from the home team.

Southwest's top performers on the night were led by EJay Scroggins with 27 points, four rebounds and an eight-of-nine from the free throw line, Donovan Holcombe with 26 points, eight rebounds and 11-of-18 from the free throw line and Jalen Williams with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. 

Southwest shot 49.3% from the field and knocked down four three-pointers, but Nelson countered with 48.5% shooting and converted 20 of 27 free throws. The Mustangs held a slight edge in points off turnovers (11–9) and got 18 points from their bench.

Southwest will look to bounce back on Saturday as they will face Nelson again on their home court at 2 p.m.
