SHREVEPORT, La. – The University of the Southwest men's basketball team showed fight early but couldn't overcome LSU Shreveport's offensive firepower, falling 111–63 Thursday night at The Dock. The Mustangs traded baskets in the opening minutes and knocked down eight three-pointers in the first half, but the Pilots' size and shooting proved too much down the stretch.
Southwest trailed 59–37 at halftime after a competitive first half highlighted by Jayvian Lawson's four three-pointers and Donovan Holcombe's strong play inside. The Mustangs shot 40% from beyond the arc in the opening period and moved the ball well, recording nine assists before the break.
The second half told a different story as LSU Shreveport extended its lead with relentless pace and efficiency. The Pilots shot 54.4% for the game and dominated the glass with a 62–32 rebounding advantage. Southwest cooled off from deep, hitting just 2-of-18 threes after halftime, and finished at 31.1% overall.
Leading the Mustangs was Jayvian Lawson with 12 points and EJay Scroggins with 11 points, three assists and two steals. Southwest recorded a total of 13 assists and 11 steals but was hurt by 19 turnovers and LSU Shreveport's dominance in the paint (60 points inside).
Southwest heads to Texas A&M University Texarkana on Saturday for its next conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
