The Southwest Lady Mustangs battled hard but came up short in both games of their doubleheader against Texas A&M-San Antonio on Friday.
Game 1: Texas A&M-San Antonio 5, Southwest 2
Despite taking an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Lady Mustangs couldn't keep the Jaguars off the board for long. Texas A&M erupted for four runs in the third inning, capitalizing on timely hitting and a Southwest error. Southwest added a run in the sixth to cut into the deficit, but a seventh-inning insurance run for the visitors sealed the 5-2 loss.
R. Burleson led the way at the plate with a double, while Au. Ramos added a solo home run and drove in both of Southwest's runs. On the mound, A. Belen threw a complete game, striking out five, but allowed seven hits including a home run.
Game 2: Texas A&M-San Antonio 8, Southwest 6
The second game of the day saw an offensive surge from both teams, with Texas A&M outlasting Southwest 8-6. The Jaguars built a 6-0 lead through four innings before the Mustangs stormed back with two runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Southwest tallied 11 hits but couldn't overcome four fielding errors that proved costly.
H. Hernandez and A. Nettles both drove in two runs, while R. Burleson and Au. Ramos chipped in with RBIs of their own. E. Martinez contributed a pair of hits, helping fuel the late rally. Pitcher R. Ashford gave up eight runs—five earned—across seven innings in the hard-fought loss.
