Box Score PLAINVIEW, Texas – The University of the Southwest men's soccer team battled through a high-paced first half that saw all six goals of the match, but the Mustangs came up just short in a 4-2 setback at Wayland Baptist on Wednesday evening. The contest was called in the 78th minute due to heavy rain and unplayable conditions.
All six goals of the evening came before halftime. After the Pioneers struck first in the 16th minute, USW responded just six minutes later when Jose Attong buried his first goal of the season off a setup from Juan Perez.
Three minutes later, Wayland reclaimed the lead, but the Mustangs quickly countered again. In the 26th minute, Perez delivered a goal of his own, his first of the season, set up by Yahir Chacon, knotting the match at 2-2.
The Pioneers, however, capitalized on two more chances before halftime, including a pair of goals from Jamol Williams, to build what would be the final 4-2 advantage.
Despite the early scoring flurry, the Mustang defense tightened in the second half, with goalkeeper Stephen Chairez stepping up to record four saves in relief and keep Wayland off the board before the match was halted in the 78th minute.
USW generated 11 shots overall, seven of which were on frame, testing the Pioneer keeper throughout the match. Perez led the attack with three shots on target to go along with his goal and assist, while Chacon and Attong each added offensive sparks of their own.
The Mustangs continue on the road Friday, September 5, at Oklahoma Panhandle State. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. (MT).
