HOBBS, N.M. – The University of the Southwest men's basketball put up a fight behind a career performance from EJay Scroggins, but a hot-shooting Texas College squad proved too much as the Mustangs fell 107–82 on Saturday afternoon at the Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center.
Texas College came out firing, shooting 57.9 percent in the first half and building a 63–46 lead at the break. The visitors finished the game at 54.2 percent from the field and 46.9 percent from three-point range, while Southwest battled to stay within striking distance behind Scroggins' relentless scoring and transition play. The Mustangs trimmed the margin to 15 midway through the second half, but Texas College answered with a decisive run fueled by Gelil Ward's perimeter shooting and Jason Roseberry Jr.'s inside presence.
Scroggins led all scorers with 32 points on 14-of-20 shooting, adding five rebounds, four steals, and two blocks in an all-around effort. Jalen Williams contributed nine points and eight assists while pulling down six rebounds, and Jayvian Lawson chipped in eight points and six assists. Kevin Boone added 10 points and seven boards, while Isaac Warhurst provided a spark off the bench with nine points and three rebounds.
Texas College was paced by Gelil Ward's 42 points, including 11 three-pointers, and Shaysten Cornish's 25 points and 15 assists. Roseberry Jr. added 25 points and eight rebounds as the visitors dominated the offensive flow.
Southwest shot 41 percent from the field and 29.6 percent from beyond the arc, converting just 6-of-12 free throws. The Mustangs held a slight edge in points off turnovers (25–24) and second-chance points (15–8), but Texas College's efficiency and depth proved decisive, as the visitors outscored Southwest 46–21 in bench production.
With the loss, Southwest moves to 5–11 overall.
The Mustangs return to action next week to face another conference opponent.
