KERRVILLE, Texas -- The University of the Southwest men's golf team opened its spring season by completing the first round of tournament play Monday at The Club at Comanche Trace, closing the day in second place behind Concordia (TX). The Mustangs posted a team total of +10, positioning themselves for a competitive push in Tuesday's final round.
Concordia recorded the low round of the day at +6 to take the early lead, while Southwest kept the margin close with several strong individual performances throughout the lineup.
Jorge Molinar III paced the Mustangs with a steady +1 (73), highlighted by five birdies and multiple key pars throughout the day. This individual performance places Molinar tied for first ahead of the finale tomorrow. Kennedy Bailey‑Borges and Konner Iglehart both followed with a 75 (+3), carding some red numbers and showing resilience after tough stretches. Jayden Romig added a +5 (77) and Jesse Valdez contributed an 83 (+11) to round out the scoring.
Across the field, scoring proved challenging as the course demanded precision around the greens and disciplined tee‑to‑fairway play. Despite the conditions, USW maintained composure and kept themselves firmly in contention entering the final day.
The Mustangs return to Comanche Trace on Tuesday morning for the final round with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (MST), aiming to erase the four‑stroke gap and compete for the tournament title.
