AMARILLO, Texas — The University of the Southwest men's golf team turned in a strong performance at the Top of Texas tournament this week, finishing third overall after three rounds at Tascosa Golf Club. The Mustangs posted scores of 305–305–294 for a three‑day total of 904, closing with their lowest round of the event to secure a top‑three finish.
Southwest opened play on Monday with a 305 in round one, led by even‑par consistency from Jesse Valdez, who carded a 72 to begin the week. Valdez also eagled hole eight, which was consistent throughout the tournament. Jorge Molinar III and Konner Iglehart followed with matching 77s, keeping the Mustangs in competitive position early. Jayden Romig added a 79, and Kennedy Bailey‑Borges completed the lineup with an 82.
The Mustangs matched their opening round with another 305 in round two. Valdez and Molinar remained steady at the top of the lineup, each firing 73, while Iglehart added a 78. Romig shot an 81, and Bailey‑Borges contributed an 83 as Southwest completed the first 36 holes in third place.
Southwest closed the tournament with its strongest performance of the week, recording a 294 in Tuesday's final round. Molinar led the Mustangs with a sharp 72, finishing +1 on the day. Iglehart and Bailey‑Borges both posted 73, while Romig supplied a 76. Valdez capped the event with a 77, securing Southwest's final team position.
Molinar and Valdez tied for the team lead, finishing in 5th place at 222 (+9). Molinar turned in rounds of 77‑73‑72, while Valdez posted 72‑73‑77. Iglehart (14th) closed at 228 (+15) after improving to a 73 in the final round. Romig (T-25th) finished at 236 (+23), and Bailey‑Borges (T-28th) ended at 238 (+25) following his best round of the week on Tuesday.
Wayland Baptist won the tournament with a total of 872, followed by West Texas A&M (B) at 880. Southwest secured third at 904, edging Park‑Gilbert by one stroke.
Southwest will continue its spring schedule at the New Mexico Junior College tournament on March 29-31.
