The University of the Southwest Men's Track & Field broke new ground with a team victory in the 2019 RRAC Men's Track & Field Championships at Brook Hill School. It was the first conference title in the sport during the 21 years that the Mustangs have competed in the RRAC. USW registered 176 team points to 163 for both Our Lady of the Lake and Texas College, which tied for second.
USW's Melvin Flax was the High Point Field Athlete for the second straight year. The senior from Oakland, Calif., was crowned the champ of the Shot Put, Discus and Hammer Throw. He has five individual conference titles in the last two years.
The Mustangs' Gilbert Ramirez finished as the runner-up in both the 800 and 1,500.
For the first time since 2006, University of the Southwest's Women's Track and Field team reached the top of the heap with a triumph in the 2019 RRAC Women's Track & Field Championships at Brook Hill School on Friday. The Mustangs dethroned Our Lady of the Lake with 248 points to the runner-up Saints' 225.
USW was strong in the throwing events. Jamiah Evans, who was the high point field athlete, won the Shot Put and Hammer Throw events while finishing as the runner-up in the Discus.
The Mustangs capitalized on other events too with Kyana Rivera claiming the Long Jump title and Alexandria Adams winning the 400-Meter Hurdles. USW's Edit Herrera was the 10,000-Meter Run champion and the runner-up in the 5,000.
