Landry to take over USW Golf Programs

The University of the Southwest is pleased to announce the hiring of Steve Landry to take over the Men's & Women's Golf programs. Landry comes to USW from Red River conference foe Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU), where he competed in his final season for the Saints during the 2018-2019 school year.

"I am pleased to announce the hiring of Steve Landry as our next Men's and Women's Head Golf Coach" Said Athletic Director Steve Appel. "He has a great vision for the future of our programs and knows how to win at the highest levels.  The future has never been brighter for our USW Golf programs and I am eager for Steve to get here on campus to get the ball rolling."

Landry's collegiate golf career at OLLU may be one of the most unique situations in the entire country. Landry began competing collegiately for OLLU at the age of 41. OLLU Head Coach Alan Baxter began recruiting Landry after the 2016 San Antonio Men's City Championship once he discovered Landry still had collegiate eligibility.

"I want to give a special thanks to OLLU Head Coach, Alan Baxter, for believing in a 41 year-old working in retail and the golf course. I also want to give a special thank you to Athletic Director, Steve Appel, President Dr. Quint Thurman and the University of the Southwest for this amazing opportunity to be the Head Coach for the Men's & Women's Golf programs. I look forward to achieving the mission and vision of the University of the Southwest and continuing to grow the University and Athletic program." Said Landry about accepting the position.

Landry had a successful career at OLLU as he won, the "Conference Newcomer of the Year" for the 2017-2018 season, as well as earning "Conference Player of the Week" 6 times during his two years representing the Saints. Landry also earned A.I.I. All-Conference Team honors in each of his playing seasons and was named to the NAIA Ping All-Region Team in 2019. Landry served as Team Captain this past season.

" I look forward to guiding and mentoring the amazing men and women that will be part of the USW Golf Team. The goal is to create amazing experiences in the classroom and on the golf course that will teach them life skills and lessons they can use to be great citizens for Hobbs and beyond. The golf team will be committed to success through hard work and perseverance, while building great camaraderie and life long relationships. We will use our commitment for success to win in the classroom and on the golf course by working towards becoming a scholar team and athlete"  said Landry of what to expect from USW Golf this upcoming season.
