The USW women's soccer team beat Wayland Baptist on Friday by the score of 4-1. There was no score at the half but the Lady Mustangs came out on a mission in the second half scoring four goals. This was the first win of the year for the Lady Mustangs and it came convincingly. They came off a good showing against Lubbock Christian in their previous match which they tied 3-3. The Lady Mustangs were the aggressor in this match outshooting Wayland 18 to 6 with 11 of the 18 being shots on goal.
After the contest Head Coach,
D'Angelo Garcia said "First half wasn't necessarily the prettiest especially defending against the wind however we minimized their shot count. Second half was much better in terms of effort, connecting from our midfield to the final third, and creating plenty of scoring opportunities. We were finally able to find the width by not forcing so much centrally which led to our goal-scoring chances. Patience and communication are key which I thought we just did that. We were also hoping for the shutout however a simple minor mistake is what got us. However, I am very pleased with the result especially it being against my alma mater, it's always a good feeling. The team deserves a couple of days of rest before we get back to our routine to prepare for our home debut on the anniversary of 9/11. The team cannot wait to finally be able to play in front of our fans and our home field."
The goal scorers for Southwest were
Priscilla Garcia (2),
Jennifer Schroeder, and
Sierra Saenz. Garcia netted her 2
nd and 3
rd goals of the season to go along with 2 assists in the contest. Schroeder knocked in her 4th goal of the season, keeping her lead in goals on the team. Saenz scored her first goal of the season in the contest. Coach Garcia had this to say about some of the key performances "
Priscilla Garcia,
Jennifer Schroeder, and
Sierra Saenz stepped up huge for us today. They were able to remain composed, connect with one another, and find the back of the net. All these goals were fun to watch. I'm also proud of the fact that some of our defenders got in the mix with assists such as
Briana Brock. No matter what position they play, anybody can everybody can help out."
The Lady Mustangs will be back in action at home against NCAA Division II UTPB on Saturday at 3:00 PM MST.
