Box Score Hobbs- With the season opening today, Thursday August 29th, the University of the Southwest (USW) Women's Soccer team (0-0-0) hosted Oklahoma Panhandle State (OPSU) (0-0-0). With the nerves that already come with the first game of the season the girls had to overcome early adversity since their head coach Edrian Negrete had to sit this opening day game out.
The Lady Mustangs opened today's scoring with a goal during the 11th minute by first-year student Hannah Davila that was assisted by sophomore Arlette Montanez which would put the lady mustangs up 1-0 over OPSU. There would be no other offense for the rest of the half and the lady mustangs went into halftime with a 1-point lead over OPSU.
With a break to adjust, each team looked to get a step ahead of the other. And OPSU did just that and scored in the 47th minute of this game to tie it all up at 1-1.
After this goal, the lady mustangs put two more goals on the board, one by Arlette Montonez in the 59th minute and the other by Senior Maya Sanchez, assisted by freshman Jayden Duran, to put the lady mustangs up 3-1.
The Lady Mustangs would give up one more goal in the 73rd minute but that is all they would give up for the rest of the match and closing out their opening day game with a victory of 3-2 improving their record to 1-0 on the year.
"I feel pretty good about the win today, the girls came out they got the job done, did what they needed to do, and worked together as one unit to get this win today and that they can use today as a stepping stone for the team to get closer, build more bonds, and have a more family feel to this season." said assistant coach Kayla Reynaud after the win today vs OPSU.
The Lady Mustangs look to build off this victory and keep the momentum going into their next matchup. Their next matchup will be at home September 4th against Wayland at 1:00 PM. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Women's Soccer on all social media for scores and updates throughout the season.
