Southwest Holds On for Opening Day Victory

January 24, 2025 – The Jake, University of the Southwest

The Mustangs started their 2025 campaign on a high note with a thrilling 6-4 victory over the Southwestern Chrisitan Eagles on Friday afternoon at The Jake. The Mustangs relied on a powerful third inning and strong pitching to secure the win.

Offensive Fireworks in the Third

After two scoreless innings, Southwest's offense came alive in the bottom of the third. Tim Sedillo got things started by reaching base after being hit by a pitch, advancing to third on a wild pitch and a single by Santi Garcia. David Amaya delivered the highlight of the inning with a triple that brought home two runs. A sacrifice fly from Hayden Woods and a clutch RBI double by Carson Miller capped the five-run frame, giving the Mustangs a commanding 5-0 lead.

Key Contributions

  • D. Amaya: The left fielder drove in three runs, including two on his crucial triple in the third inning.

  • C. Miller: His RBI double in the third inning added to the Mustangs' momentum.

  • T. Sedillo: Reached base three times, stole two bases, and scored twice, setting the table for Southwest's offense.

Eagles Battle Back

Southwestern Christian responded in the fifth inning when D. Paredes hit a bases-loaded single, driving in three runs to cut the Mustangs' lead to 5-3. They added another run in the sixth, but the Mustangs' pitching staff held firm.

Pitching Performance

Southwest's starting pitcher, Miguel Olivas, was solid through five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four to earn the win. Relievers Taymon Burrola and Angel Rios combined to hold off the Lions in the final innings, with Rios earning the save after a clean seventh.

Key Defensive Plays

The Mustangs' defense turned a critical double play in the second inning and showed resilience despite one error on the day. First baseman Carlos Jaquez-Munoz and shortstop Tim Sedillo were pivotal in securing key outs.

Looking Ahead

The Mustangs (1-0) will look to build on this win as they continue their early-season schedule.

The Eagles (0-1) will aim to bounce back in their next outing after a valiant effort on the road.
