In a game filled with offense, energy, and extra-base hits, the Southwest Mustangs fell short against Wayland Baptist, losing 19–6 on Tuesday afternoon. Despite several bright moments at the plate, the Mustangs couldn't contain Wayland Baptist's relentless lineup, which erupted for 17 hits and multiple big innings.
Early Holes and Offensive Highlights
Wayland Baptist set the tone early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning—one on a steal and the other on an error. Southwest responded in the second with a sacrifice fly from J. Rosales, scoring V. Chavez to cut the deficit to 2–1.
The Pioneers blew the game open with a five-run third inning, highlighted by RBI hits from F. Polanco, S. Fabian, and C. Toledo, stretching their lead to 7–1. Southwest chipped away with an RBI double by M. Gonzales in the bottom half and exploded for three more in the fifth when Chavez crushed a three-run homer to left, bringing the Mustangs within striking distance at 7–5.
But any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the sixth, as Wayland Baptist erupted for eight runs, including a three-run homer by D. Claudio and multi-RBI hits from Peyton and Pimentel.
Final Inning Spark
Southwest added one final run in the seventh as M. Gonzales launched a solo home run, finishing the day with three hits and two RBIs. The Mustangs' lineup showed flashes of power, collecting six hits and six runs, but struggled to keep pace with the relentless Pioneers.
