HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest women's golf team opened play Monday at the Rockwind Community Links Golf Course, completing round one of the two‑round NMJC Invitational. Tough course conditions and steady winds contributed to elevated scoring across the field, with the Lady Mustangs finishing the day in eighth and ninth place.
Southwest's first team closed the opening round at +74, while the second team posted +87. Despite the demanding layout and challenging greens, the Mustangs showed resilience throughout the round, stringing together key pars and navigating difficult stretches with determination.
Sophia Vidal led the way for the Mustangs, carding an 86 (+14) behind steady play on the back nine. Gabrielle Perez and Lucy Garza followed closely at +15 and +17, respectively, each showing flashes of strong ball‑striking. Stephanie Smith added a +28, while Katelyn Morris rounded out the scoring at +31.
On the second team side, Jada Dickson paced the group with a 92, highlighted by several well‑executed recoveries around the greens. Gabriella Honesto (+21), Kylie Bradford (+23), Sarah Monaghen (+23), and Aiyana Munoz (+36) each contributed to the team effort and will look to build on today's experience heading into round two.
Round two is scheduled for Tuesday morning, where Southwest will aim to climb the leaderboard and capitalize on a fresh start.
