HOBBS, N.M. – Freshman
Desiree Morgas converted a penalty kick at 41:35 in the first half and the University of the Southwest women's soccer team downed Texas A&M Texarkana 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Red River Athletic Conference action at Hobbs High School.
With the win the Mustangs improve 1-1 in conference play and head into a tough slate this weekend at University of Saint Thomas and Houston-Victoria.
"Today was a big win for us," USW head coach
Joshua Smith said following the match. "With a young team, we were hopeful to respond well to the unfortunate result of in the Wiley game (Friday) and we did just that. Texarkana has a lot of upperclassmen in their attack and our defense was able to shut them down. We fought hard, found a way to win, and only gave them a couple quality looks on frame. Desiree's goal was class and really gave us the spark we needed. I'm proud of the girls and look forward to this upcoming week!"
Morgas received a good look and went for it.
"I was thinking about sending it to someone on a header, but at the last second I decided to just go for it," Morgas said. "I'm so happy it went in and I was super excited!"
For senior
Alexis Gipson, she was pleased with the reponse from the Wiley game.
"I thought today was a well fought game," Gipson added. "It was really exciting to see us bounce back from Friday and this was an important win for our program. We were able to show that we can compete."
USW (7-1, 1-1 RRAC) pressured TAMUTU (5-4, 0-1 RRAC) throughout and outshot the Eagles 10-7, including an 8-1 margin in the first half.
The Mustangs play Thursday, Oct. 5 at University of Saint Thomas and Saturday, Oct. 7 at University of Houston-Victoria.
