HOBBS, N.M. – University of the Southwest men's soccer netted a pair of first-half goals en route to a 2-1 Red River Athletic Conference win over Huston-Tillotson Saturday afternoon at Bob Moran Soccer Field.
"This was our most complete game this season in terms of sticking to the game plan tactically," USW head coach
Robert Ssejjemba said following the match. "I thought we defended well, controlled the ball and executed in the final third."
It didn't take long for the Mustangs to find pay dirt. Just three minutes into the half
Jack Laurie delivered a perfect cross inside the box and freshman
Goitom Kidane chipped it in to give USW an early lead.
Moments later HTU (5-3-2, 4-1-1 RRAC) converted a penalty kick to tie it.
However, at 36:23 junior
Fernando Sanchez found space in the box and drilled a rocket into the frame and USW (6-4-2, 3-2-1 RRAC) went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Neither team scored in the second half and the USW defense held to secure the conference win.
USW dominated on offense and outshot HTU 22-8, including an impressive 15-2 margin in the second half.
Laurie finished with a game-high six shot attempts, while freshman
Trevor Stovall added four shots, senior
Joshua Lourens had three shots and senior
Ramiro Perez added a pair.
Junior and reigning RRAC Defensive Player of the Week
Dominic Kutzke stopped two shots.
USW returns to action Thursday and plays host to LSU-Alexandria at Bob Moran Soccer Field.
