The 2023 USW Men's and Women's teams started their season off this past Monday and Tuesday, competing in the USW Fall Classic. The Men's team finished sixth and seventh in the team standings, but had some individuals Stand out with their play. Coach Lester was impressed with their play with only having 1 week of practice under their belts.
Harrison Kessler paved the way for us and played some very solid rounds of golf (76,74,74). Golf that I knew he was capable of since last year. As one of the seniors, he stepped up like a leader should showed what is expected of this team, and set the bar for the underclassman.
Kennedy Bailey-Borges showed signs of what is to come and that makes me very excited, with scores of 78/74/79. Freshmen
Ashton Aranda (80,73,77),
Jayden Romig (79,80,79), Joshua Johnson (80,74,84) and
Kade Dennis (77,79,82) showed signs that they have what it takes to play at this level and what is to come for this program in the years ahead of us and that is something that I can't wait to see as this year continues to unfold and into the years to come.
The USW Women's team finished 3
rd in this week's USW fall classic; Coach Lester saw bright spots individually and hopes for what he thinks his team can accomplish with more practice time and tournament experience.
On the women's side
Brynlee Dyas played well for 2 rounds and struggled in one. She is one or two swings away from posting some great scores or us.
Lucy Garza is starting to find her own, and with her continuing to stay mentally focused in practice, her scores will soon begin to fall as well. Freshmen
Kylie Bradford and
Emilee Garcia are starting to see where improvements can be made, and they are fully committed to working on them. The scores are very soon to follow the hard work. Freshman Kacie Groves had a good first 2 rounds, then struggled in the final round. After talking with her, she said she is hungrier than ever to get better. I do not doubt with the hard work she said is coming, her scores will be some of the best she has ever shot, and so with the work ethic of these girls in the women's program, I have no doubt she will be back on track ready to turn some heads.
Both Teams will play next at Texas Wesleyan University on Sept 11
th and Sept 12
