Southwest Splits Doubleheader with New Mexico Highlands, Bounces Back in Game Two

Southwest baseball took on New Mexico Highlands in a doubleheader on February 25, 2025, at "The Jake." The series resulted in a split, with each team taking a game.

Game 1: New Mexico Highlands 9, Southwest 0

In the first game of the doubleheader, New Mexico Highlands dominated Southwest, shutting them out 9-0. Highlands put together a late offensive surge with a six-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach. The Southwest offense struggled, managing just six hits and failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Pitcher R. Brion threw a complete-game shutout for New Mexico Highlands, allowing six hits while striking out four. Southwest's pitching staff had difficulty containing the Highlands' lineup, surrendering three home runs and ten total hits.

Game 2: Southwest 6, New Mexico Highlands 3

Southwest bounced back in the second game, securing a 6-3 victory with a strong sixth inning where they plated five runs. The game remained close until that offensive explosion, which sealed the win. Southwest's patience at the plate played a key role, as they drew ten walks and took advantage of critical New Mexico Highlands' pitching miscues. The Southwest pitching staff held strong, limiting Highlands to just five hits while recording three strikeouts. C. Miller and A. Montiel contributed key RBIs to secure the victory.

Coaches' Comments

"We ran ourselves out of the ballgame in game one today. We had opportunities that we just didn't capitalize on and opportunities we let slip away. Overall, I thought our arms did a good job and competed today, and our defensive work was good. It wasn't an offensive day for anyone today; however, just like them in the first game, our offensive approach later in game two allowed us to draw some walks and put us in better counts that led to some timely runs late. I'm happy they didn't give up after a frustrating first game. We will get back tomorrow and get ready for another conference matchup this weekend before we hit the road for over a week in Louisiana."
