WEATHERFORD, Texas – The University of the Southwest Mustangs closed out play at the Texas Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a tie for sixth place in an 11-team field at Hawks Creek Golf Club.
Southwest posted rounds of 289 (+1) and 293 (+5) during Monday's opening 36 holes before carding a 294 (+6) in Tuesday's final round. The Mustangs finished the 54-hole event at 12-over-par (876), tying Texas A&M-Victoria for sixth place and finishing ahead of Texas A&M-San Antonio, Texas Wesleyan (B), Texas Wesleyan (C), and Southwest Christian.
Weatherford College and Texas A&M-Texarkana shared the team title at 24-under par, while Texas Wesleyan finished third at 22-under.
The Mustangs were led by Jayden Romig, who tied for 11th place with a three-round score of 213 (-3). Romig opened the tournament with a 71 before firing a team-low 69 in the second round on Monday. He closed with a 73 on Tuesday to remain under par for the tournament.
Jesse Valdez finished 21st overall at even-par 216. Valdez posted rounds of 71, 72, and 73, giving Southwest a second golfer inside the top 25.
Sam Clair earned a tie for 26th place after carding rounds of 71, 75, and 74 to finish at 220 (+4). Clair's opening-round 71 helped set the pace for the Mustangs during the first day of competition.
Konner Iglehart tied for 46th at 227 (+11). After rounds of 76 and 77 on Monday, Iglehart improved in the final round with a 74 to move up the leaderboard.
Christian Martinez placed 54th with a three-round total of 230 (+14), shooting rounds of 77, 77, and 76.
Southwest placed three golfers inside the top 30 and two inside the top 25 while recording all three team rounds below 295. The Mustangs improved one spot in the standings during the final round to secure a share of sixth place.
