GOLF: James to Take Over Golf Programs

The University of the Southwest Athletic Department is very excited to name Tyler James the new Head Coach of the golf programs. James started his collegiate playing career at Ottawa University where he was a part of 3 team wins and had 5 top 10 finishes personally in two years. He finished his playing career and graduated at Howard Payne University where he collected 3 top 10 finishes.

"I'm excited to welcome Tyler James as our new Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach." Said Director of Athletics Steve Appel. "Tyler will bring a great attitude to this program and I believe will create some stability for both our programs.  Tyler's ability to recruit and knowledge of this area will help him out tremendously.  I am looking forward to seeing the things he can accomplish with these two programs."

Coach James spent time as the Coach of the Men's program at Brownwood High school in Texas where they had two team wins and 4 individual victories in his time there. He also spent time as the assistant coach for the Men's and Women's golf team at Howard Payne University where he oversaw recruiting, tournament day preparations, and day-to-day practice planning. For the last two years, Tyler was a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Men's and Women's golf teams at East Texas Baptist University. At ETBU he assisted in helping the Tigers reach as high as 7th in the nation on the Men's side and 3rd in the nation on the Women's side. At ETBU on the Men's side, he helped coached one individual champion, 1 1st team all-conference player, 1 2nd team all-conference player, and 2 honorable mention players. On the Women's side, they had 4 tournament victories in the two years he spent there and one individual champion.

"I'd like to thank both Mr. Appel and Dr. Thurman for giving me this opportunity. I am looking forward to growing the program and developing all-around great individuals academically and athletically. I am excited for what the future will hold with a great University and having one of the best courses in New Mexico literally across the street that we get to utilize every day" said James.

James received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Howard Payne University and received a Masters of Science in Kinesiology from East Texas Baptist University.
