Southwest Battles Back to Take Series Finale, Looks to Build Momentum

The Southwest baseball team hosted a three-game series against Our Lady of the Lake at "The Jake" from February 22-23, 2025. The series consisted of high-scoring games with dramatic late-inning action.

Game 1 (Feb 22)

  • Final Score: Our Lady of the Lake 10, Southwest 1
  • Recap: Our Lady of the Lake jumped out to an early lead and used a six-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Southwest struggled offensively, managing only one run while collecting just a handful of hits. Defensively, they committed no errors but couldn't contain the opponent's offense.

Game 2 (Feb 22)

  • Final Score: Our Lady of the Lake 11, Southwest 4
  • Recap: The second game followed a similar script, with Our Lady of the Lake pulling away late. Southwest held a narrow lead entering the ninth, but a seven-run outburst from the visitors sealed the game. Southwest's offense showed signs of life, with players like M. Gonzales contributing a home run and two RBIs, but it wasn't enough to counteract the opponent's strong finish.

Game 3 (Feb 23)

  • Final Score: Our Lady of the Lake 11, Southwest 14
  • Recap: Southwest responded with a thrilling comeback victory in the series finale. Despite falling behind early due to a five-run second inning by Our Lady of the Lake, Southwest stormed back with key contributions from B. Ledezma (1) and H. Woods (2), who hit a home run. Pitching struggles persisted, with Southwest issuing 14 walks, but the offense compensated with a 14-run explosion, holding on for the win.

Coaches' Comments

Southwest's head coach Steve Appel reflected on the team's response to adversity after two tough losses:

"I thought our guys responded well on Sunday, especially after how we played the day before. We have been putting too much pressure on ourselves, and I think we have forgotten what the true mission was. We knew Sunday was going to be a battle and test our emotions; however, the guys stayed together and supported each other all day. It was the type of day we needed to get back in the right direction. If we can continue to play selfless baseball, we will be just fine down the road.

We have a quick turnaround and will play a lot of baseball this week. We will have a short practice tomorrow and get ready for the remainder of the week."
